Cotgrave Colliery
Welfare United
The Early Years
Football in Cotgrave started as early as 1946, when Cotgrave FC was formed with the team joining the South Notts Realm League. 1954/55 saw the first silverware winning the2nd Division championship. 1955/56 Joined the Notts & District League & for the next 12 years only managed to finish mid-table. 1968/69/70 saw a much-improved Cotgrave winning the Div 3 & Div 2 respectively, The improvement was probably as a direct result of the opening of the new Cotgrave coalmine This saw fit, young, sport hungry miners from across the nation seeking work & making Cotgrave their new home. Another slump followed with no other success until 1996/97 when they were runners up in the Notts Junior Cup. In the following season 1997/98 saw them go one step better, when Cotgrave won the Notts Junior Cup. Flush with this success saw them to move in 1979/80 to the Notts Amateur League & in their first season gain the runners up spot. 1980/81 was an excellent year winning both the Notts Amateur League & Cup. Building upon this success saw a move into a higher league the Notts Combination & it was during the 1980’s that Cotgrave were at their most successful. In 1983 saw an amalgamation of Cotgrave FC & Cotgrave Colliery Welfare FC. Which brought about the first name change to Cotgrave United FC & a change of ground to our present Woodview ground. This merger was the beginning of a new era in our history & the formation of our reserve team. In 1984/85 saw our first trophy in the local cup competition, the Cotgrave Shield, (see team picture). 1985/86 Runners up in both the Notts Combination & the K. O. Cup. 1986/87 saw the team sweep the board in winning all the major trophies in the Combination, the Premier League, K. O. Cup, & the Senior Cup. It is without doubt that having a quality reserve team greatly contributed to this success; in fact, the reserves went onto finish third in the Notts Combination Division 1. After this very successful season the First Team was accepted into the Notts Alliance & the Reserves moving up into the Notts Amateur League. These moves proved to be our greatest test, but with both the First & Reserve Teams having strong quality squads, the First Team won the Alliance Division 2 Cup & the Reserves gaining promotion to the Notts Amateur League in the 1988/89 season. In the following seasons spanning 1990 to 1996 saw both teams consolidate there mid-table positions & in 1996/97 the First Team won The Notts Alliance Senior Cup. In 1998 the club decided to revert back to a previous name “Cotgrave Colliery Welfare FC” with the aim to re-enforce the clubs historic link with mining industry. Moving into the “New Millennium” (2000) both teams struggled in their respective leagues; this situation instigated our next major change, which was to propose a merge with a newly formed Cotgrave United. The season 2000/01 saw this merge come to fruition and a new name “Cotgrave Colliery Welfare United FC”. The football club now had 3 teams, 2 in the Notts Alliance & 1 in the Notts Amateur league. The newly merge teams brought in fresh faces, committees were amalgamated and a whole new direction & aims was mapped out. These aims were to

As a result of the energy and dynamism generated within the club, the hard work has finally bore fruit, resulting in the year 2003 new floodlights were officially commissioned by the Nottingham Forest Manager Mr Paul Hart. Again in the same season the Academy (under19s) team was introduced to the club.
